Mental Balance and Imbalance
So far, we have looked at the nature of conflicts. Once this dimension has been grasped, it is easy to chart the dimensions of mental balance. Moving away from conflict studies to mental balance, harmony and well-being, well-being implies a relatively enduring form of happiness. A Buddhist term for such happiness is sukha, which may be defined in this context as a state of flourishing. Conative balance precedes the other three in the process of cultivating mental wellbeing, because this factor is what allows people to set intentions, goals, and priorities. In effect, conative processes set the mental balances. Attentional balance is the next mental factor, because attention is a necessary skill for achieving the final two factors, cognitive and affective balance.11
